I dug through my archives of images and found the below piece, which my research indicated was the title page for a printing of Augustinus' De Civitate De, which was originally printed at a the monastery of Subiaco in 1467. </div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="745" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNey8DiLWxPUs7Y38aaJgfRE1G0pQ7iRSv9oyM51YploYSvie5Vfu8dH5YNKVngap-UxBnAXOuZuFJtwng8CT5awK5qfBZXowZa0GEmbS9ojHaT-5cFjO3MW7elcK_Gw5m2g2MfhSWmHw/w198-h256/82223867_2518364281765784_4846213072697688064_n.jpg" width="198" /></div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7Ve4al5WQ2e4JFubcgU-cnxJJPhK0z-qmXUouoD1IhDOrdguEqGiBmvtsgc8WvnnSVXyzb-mw4XEUU7GwXNZ9ul1DHv9vyHTxtQEKJLH9yKuXW05QeofOSCc0vHGIWTt-MHy0JufTe0/s1000/17B_bernard-sermons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="658" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7Ve4al5WQ2e4JFubcgU-cnxJJPhK0z-qmXUouoD1IhDOrdguEqGiBmvtsgc8WvnnSVXyzb-mw4XEUU7GwXNZ9ul1DHv9vyHTxtQEKJLH9yKuXW05QeofOSCc0vHGIWTt-MHy0JufTe0/w169-h256/17B_bernard-sermons.jpg" width="169" /></a><span style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;">My research unfortunately cannot date this specific page to that date (as books of this period had title pages left blank to be painted as desired). In fact, the aesthetic of the cupids and curling ribbon give it a slightly post-period feel to me, but there are, however, similar roundel-style pages in period, such as the St. Bernard Sermons Manuscript circa 1491 with miniatures done by Giovanni Boccardi around 1491-1492.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I determined that I wanted to create a Master of Defense livery collar out of the inner ring of the wreath, and thus a scroll was born. Life changes, priority changes. You know how it goes.<br />
<br />
But this piece is just too fun not to share. HE Sionainn contacted me directly when he was put on vigil for the Order of the Pelican. He knew exactly what he wanted and asked for help. I've never had anyone provide such specific desires, and frankly it was awesome. I swear, I spend half my time deciding what to do, and the other half doing it. So this sped things along, dramatically.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg836fyOBnFWZD2LWGvd2eRaD_pQxkt_bAvjAFU4uyxLmS4HTzHYK0-U0IGVc32cMUASBP8Cfx5kfWB6M1Zjldwp6TnxX3hxMIluErTjUQRhsac2wD2e9BCFS8pOdU9oKs7I3u6KZC1OK4/s1600/64719381_2350929608454032_7933650515290750976_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="743" data-original-width="750" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg836fyOBnFWZD2LWGvd2eRaD_pQxkt_bAvjAFU4uyxLmS4HTzHYK0-U0IGVc32cMUASBP8Cfx5kfWB6M1Zjldwp6TnxX3hxMIluErTjUQRhsac2wD2e9BCFS8pOdU9oKs7I3u6KZC1OK4/s320/64719381_2350929608454032_7933650515290750976_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the inspiration piece he asked for me to use. It's consistent with many period patents. He provided a beautiful art file for his achievement of arms as well. He also specifically asked for the seal, which proved to be the biggest challenge for me to overcome.<br />
<br />
I'd heard Artemisia had a Kingdom seal, but I'd never seen it, nor had I seen scrolls with wax seals ever given out. After some sleuthing, it was found, and I borrowed the seal and made a whole pile of wax stamped templates, which can be applied either by warming the wax gently (possibly ruining the impression) or by gluing it down. I gave most of them back to the kingdom to use as they see fit, and kept a few in my stash for future scrolls.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since there's not much research to share for this, I'll post a bunch of progress pics and close-ups so you can see the detail work I put into this baby. This piece is done with Pilot Iroshizuku Take-Sumi ink, and J. Herbin 1670 Hematite Rouge ink on Pergamenata. I used Winsor & Newton gouache and Finetec pigment for the metallic spots. Don't be like me.<br />
<br />
In March of last year, this piece was completed and given to Count Yuri and Countess Sumayya, as a double-award of Golden Pillars.<br />

This particular piece took the assistance of several individuals to bring to fruition, and I'm blessed to have been part of it.<br />
<br />
Countess Gwenevere McKay became my information funnel, telling me all about the recipient (whom I knew from a distance but had never interacted with). It was from her information that details specific to Joel were included in the illumination, including his Crusader persona, the image of him slaying a dragon, and of course his choice in supporters for his achievement of arms.<br />
<br />
The text was written by His Highness Prince Sean, and was translated into Latin by Master Drix. There was a hidden message in the text, but it is only evident in the English version, alas. I'll leave that secret between Sean and Joel.<br />
<br />
Given Joel's Crusader persona, and his apparent obsessive study of it, the obvious inspiration choice was to base the scroll on the <a href="http://www.themorgan.org/collection/Crusader-Bible" target="_blank">Crusader Bible.</a> Each page has architectural details in the illumination panels. My version was not a direct copy of any specific folio, but an amalgamation of several, keeping to the appropriate style and color schemes.<br />

The lower half of the square is a traditional Crusader Bible inspired action scene, full of far more death and gore than I've ever painted. There are a ton of tiny details, so click the image to zoom in and see the carnage. </div>

Boring details:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I blocked out the space needed for the square Crusader Bible illumination. Since the Crusader Bible doesn't have much text on any pages, I wanted the illumination to be very prominent. Making this look like a two page spread was the only way to fit all the necessary text and make this happen. I started on the sketching phase as well, but didn't get far before I started on the calligraphy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then laid the full calligraphy down. I considered keeping two columns on the right folio as with the left, but decided against it, as the Crusader Bible has pages with both one and two columns, so I opted for the uniqueness of that format. (This also keeps things easier).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that was complete, I sketched out all of the illumination in detail, did the gold leaf, then began painting. Below are pics of the progress, from start to finish. As always, click to enlarge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This piece is done on pergamenata with Pilot Iroshizuko Sumi ink, 24 carat gold leaf, Winsor & Newton gouache, and Finetec micah pigment in gold.</div>

They then recorded a music video which I assisted with. In working with him, he requested assistance with his band's logo.<br />
<br />
He wanted a Capital D done in fancy calligraphy (technical term is cadel). During our conversations, he mentioned that his family coat of arms included several bats, so when I did a mock-up of a design idea, I included a bat as part of the design. Seems that was a win.<br />
<br />
The logo was incorporated into the music video with animation. <br />

It is purported to be by Stephan Brechtel but I've been unable to confirm due to dead links and my inability to understand German. I can confirm that There is a Stephan Brechtel that was a calligrapher in Neuremberg in the late 1500's. That said, this is a poorly documented piece, but it was too lovely to not try out. My variation uses primary blue Winsor & Newton gouache and Hematite Rouge ink by J. Herbin on Bristol vellum finish paper.</div>

HL Cathryn Anne of Newbury is a lovely lady with some wonderful embroidery skills. I'm incredibly honored to be able to work with her.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghWpPFKgHA2QtCj99S5wvfvPaEvsunaUOSoIqW2Do5BsxHNn7ln9Fz26DZMIgULzKuzWem1n8nHUrthkGwnm7k5KdACRzbPqUJYLPgjRv_lIlv1KhZ-u3YGOdnln7OcdY_KisXN7G8vVM/s1600/20171117_163213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1266" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghWpPFKgHA2QtCj99S5wvfvPaEvsunaUOSoIqW2Do5BsxHNn7ln9Fz26DZMIgULzKuzWem1n8nHUrthkGwnm7k5KdACRzbPqUJYLPgjRv_lIlv1KhZ-u3YGOdnln7OcdY_KisXN7G8vVM/s320/20171117_163213.jpg" width="253" /></a>In honor of this event, I made and gifted her with a hand-bound book, so that she may journal about her artistic endeavors, document what she wants to, and hopefully indicate areas that she enjoyed and things she'd do differently for the next project. So much of what she does ends up given away due to her generous nature, so I want her to keep track of what she's doing.<br />
<br />
I crafted the covers with chipboard covered in goat skin, that has been stamped and dyed to look like snake skin. This is not a period practice as far as I know (leatherwork is not an area of study for me...yet), but the end result is lovely and frankly, I liked it (though it proves to be incredibly difficult to photograph). The bindings are done in coptic stitch out of green waxed cotton. The end papers are also green. Green is the color oft used to signify an apprentice/laurel relationship, so this was why I chose this color.<br />

The Gryphon's Pride is an award given to youth in the Kingdom of Artemisia, who show great service and promise to the Kingdom. As such, I chose to do something a little outside my norm, and just paint up something bright colored and whimsical. The zoomorphic creature border was taken from a Dover celtic borders book (I'll edit this post later with that book's details).<br />
<br />
The ink is Pilot Iroshizuko Yu-Yake (sunset orange). Paints are Winsor & Newton gouache, all on bristol smooth finish paper.Jaquelinnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04627180084418283174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3487011485573550992.post-78519752968216652772017-10-17T09:38:00.000-07:002017-10-17T09:38:17.738-07:00Gryphon and Candle<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVcHzZmVmA356bn75Jz90ilYimTSS1knslrTx75k69cWzSPNjKOqSe3sZA5oQZkCQRcowSpfYlFfUbYnYmalF_rnOzW4xE9QmxPhA3L0ff5o11zG4KefF_pou9XFVpdNPgitvbMyBkdkA/s1600/Sionainn_Candle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1196" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVcHzZmVmA356bn75Jz90ilYimTSS1knslrTx75k69cWzSPNjKOqSe3sZA5oQZkCQRcowSpfYlFfUbYnYmalF_rnOzW4xE9QmxPhA3L0ff5o11zG4KefF_pou9XFVpdNPgitvbMyBkdkA/s320/Sionainn_Candle.jpg" width="239" /></a>I have been watching a certain individual, and his efforts to beautify the SCA, both in personal projects, and those for the Kingdom at large. He has created regalia, banners, and crafted items for personal use. He has issues a challenge to increase the pageantry and beauty of the game, and has acted as an example to follow in this regard. His humility in his craft is significant, but his end products do appear to be of quality. Thus, I was happy to create a scroll to commemorate Don Sionainn Padraig Caimbeul's admittance into the Order of the Gryphon and Candle, the Baronial Arts and Sciences award for the Barony of Gryphon's Lair.<br />
<br />
This piece is based on the <a href="https://library.si.edu/digital-library/book/arithmetichaboe00boet" target="_blank">Incipit Arithmeticha Boetij by Boethius, c. 1400, housed at the Smithsonian.</a> My interpretation is done with Winsor & Newton gouache and Pilot Iroshizuku Take-Sumi ink on vellum finish bristol.<br />
<br />
Overall, I find that I really enjoy this style of illumination. It has a complex, elegant, and highly decorative feel, while coming together quickly. This is a great benefit to me, as I find that hand and arm fatigue sets in faster these days, and I'm not able to paint all day as I used to.<br />

We talked about some ideas, including a quote she wanted included on it, and I suggested it be our wedding gift to her.<br />
<br />
This was an incredibly fun chance to delve into a new style of art, and to create a project full of fun colors, textures, and symbols of love from many different people, particularly the love and admiration of our friends Theresa and Marshall.<br />

The last month was spent focusing on projects and preparation for Artemisia XX Celebration, and a special Wedding gift project that I'll post about later. Therefore Midge Marsh Melee arrived in a hurried flurry. I had to prepare a scroll for the Baronial Archery Champion with less than a week to do so.
<br />
<br />
I found an inspiration image on the Bibliothèque nationale de France website, and decided to use the decorative "N" Cadel as the focal point. This would be a quick project but still look nice and fancy for the recipient.<br />

Published in 1583, the "First Works of Jacques Devaulx" appears to be a nautical reference.<br />

Lately I've been struggling with pain in my hands and wrists, which makes doing calligraphy and illumination a lot less fun than it has been. Medical testing is forthcoming, so hopefully we can resolve it. Sadly, as a result the calligraphy is a lot less precise than I'd prefer, but given the timeline for completion, it's a win. In retrospect, I should have done a batarde hand, but c'est la vie. Gothic Textura is one I do in my sleep, so that's just what came out.<br />
<br />
In the end, Owen y Bwa ap Howell won the competition, and the scroll is in his hands.<br />

I begged Their Excellencies to allow me to create the scroll.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My initial plan was to create a custom hand-painted silk folding fan, to support and honor all the work she has put into her Japanese research and persona. Unfortunately time and finances got away from me and when my husband saw an Uchiwa (rigid paper fan) at an Asian shop, I picked it up to use as a frame.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is one of those cases where I made assumptions and tried to document my work after the fact. Oopsie.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
It appears that the Uchiwa, or rigid fan, is a Chinese export, most likely not being popular in Japan until decidedly post-SCA Period. They were largely wood-block printed on rice paper and extremely popular from 1644 until today.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The pien-mien is the Chinese equivalent. The earliest pien-mien (fixed fan) was a fan covered with feathers or silk stretched over a frame and either painted or embroidered. It was not until the Song dynasty [960-1279] that painting these fans became an accepted, indeed esteemed, branch of art. This type of fan derives its name from the use to which it was put: hiding the face and consequently concealing the emotions. Officials, for example, shielded their faces with these fans to signify their unwillingness to be approached by petitioners. <a href="http://www.spurlock.illinois.edu/collections/search-collection/details.php?a=2007.12.0003A" target="_blank">reference: Spurlock Museum</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unfortunately I lack the language and searching skills to find sufficient evidence of earlier period examples, even those from China using the internet. This will require books I don't have and additional research. Again, oopsie. But here's a bread crumb I found. </div>
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
So, lessons were learned about researching first, and not making assumptions. However, the rigid fan is EXCELLENT for personal cooling (far superior to a folding fan), and since Nana spends a great deal of time marshaling the rapier field, it is still a very usable tool for her.</div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the commercial uchiwa as a frame, traced the shape onto blue paper, and drew her personal unregistered device onto the center. Her colors are navy and hot pink. The text is written in the style of a haiku in faux-Japanese using Finetec gold gouache. I then drew Japanese style motifs on each of the fans in the same gold, and glued it to the fan base using PVA glue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I left the back of the fan as purchased, with it's pretty Japanese koi pond print. I used a thin strip of gold paper from my bookbinding stash to bind the outer ridge. It is rather sturdy and creates a wonderful breeze.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The text reads (vertical, right to left):</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Haiku is a Japanese poetic form consisting of 17 syllables arranged in lines of 5, 7, and 5. Again, assumptions were made without prior research, and I've come to find out that haiku didn't gain distinction until the Tokugawa Era (1603-1770). Oopsie. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So overall, mistakes were made, but despite all that I like the finished product and Nana liked it so I'll call it a win, if an embarrassing one.</div>

<br />
Conchobhar is one of those people who is always busy doing things for other people. Always with a note of humor and sarcasm, and we love him for it. I was thrilled to be a part of his project, and excited to once again work with HE Bethany. She and I worked together on Conchobhar's White Scarf Scroll back in the day. What a wonderful thing to come together once again for him.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We based this piece on three things. Her Majesty Gwenevere and Conchobhar's collection of cats, combined with his nonstop heraldic work, in a late-period design.</div>

After some planning calls, I did the layout, calligraphy, and acanthus border with gilded accents on Pergamenata. I used Pilot Irishuzoku Sumi ink, Windsor and Newton gouache, and gold leaf is adhered with miniatum ink.<br />

The calligraphy hand on the inspiration piece appeared to be a transitional style that lands somewhere between Humanist and Secretary, so I sort of analyzed and tried to create something similar.<br />

The winner ended up being Maestro Azir de Lucero, and his name was added on site. It is based on a page from the Hours of Catherine of Cleves, though I made the blossoms orange rather than pink. I wanted to reflect Baronial colors a bit more, and though there is no orange in our colors, it represents "gold" better than pink does.<br />

Superhero wife comes to the rescue! My superhero costume closely resembles a bathrobe and slippers, folks. Don't be too impressed. This was done back in January.<br />
<br />
This piece had to be done very quickly, given the deadline and the necessity that I be at the hospital with said husband. Therefore, I tried my hand at micrography, also called microcalligraphy. This is a Jewish art form which uses words to create images, dating back to at least the 9th Century. <a href="https://www.bl.uk/hebrew-manuscripts/articles/micrography-a-jewish-art" target="_blank">This article at the British Library</a> shows some examples and history.<br />
<br />
I sketched Malatesta's seven pointed comet, and wrote the scroll text to create the image in her heraldic colors. I'm afraid this was done so late at night that I didn't keep a copy of the wording in order to tell you what it says, and the image is too fuzzy to read. Basically it talks about Malatesta's amazing dedication to service in her official capacity as Lady in Waiting and in other roles as well. If you don't know this very fine gentle, you should!<br />
<br />
I had envisioned their Excellencies signing this along the line down the center of the comet's tail, hence the penciled in line.<br />

I debated for some time whether to make a traditional scroll, something "new to me" style-wise, or something non-traditional. I opted for non-traditional, and decided to make a hand-bound book, since I did a <a href="http://cobalt-dragonfly.blogspot.com/2016/01/gryphon-and-hammer-scroll.html" target="_blank">traditional one for Asgierr just last year</a>.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">St. Cuthbert Gospel, British Library</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was inspired by the St. Cuthbert Gospel, an early 8th Century manuscript (<a href="http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=Add_MS_89000" target="_blank">British Library Add MS 89000</a>). The St. Cuthbert Gospel is not only a phenomenal piece of work, but is the earliest intact European example of bookbinding.<br />
<br />
The British Library's blog has a fascinating post <a href="http://blogs.bl.uk/digitisedmanuscripts/2015/06/getting-under-the-covers-of-the-st-cuthbert-gospel.html" target="_blank">here </a>about results of X-Rays and CT scans of the book. Previously, attempts at duplicating the bindings included using leather or rope for the raised design. The CT Scans make it clear that the design is made out of a clay-like substance. Mine is not a replication of this book, not by far! But the design concepts are what got my brain ticking.<br />
<br />
I started off in traditional fashion by cutting out pages, and folding them into quires of five or so pages each. I then wrote the scroll text, loosely based on/inspired by the intro to Beowulf. I give full credit to <a href="http://scriptoriumsca.blogspot.com/2013/11/on-writing-award-scroll.html" target="_blank">THL Colyne Stewart for this blog post at The Scriptorium for the inspiration</a>.<br />
<br />
I translated the wording into runes - yes, the English decoder-ring style runes. Please don't hate. I know this is not a period practice, but I knew the recipient would love this. I then wrote out said runes on pages 2 and 3 of the first quire. I left page 1 blank, because every book I've made, without exception, gets glued to the end page at least 1/4 inch up.<br />
<br />

My father is a brilliant craftsman (he also made my book press). I'm a lucky girl. Click the images to see larger versions.<br />
<br />
I used a simple twine for my sewing cords, and waxed linen thread to stitch the quires together. This was my first time using a stitching frame, and it makes some things easier, and some things more difficult. I imagine it would make life much better when making a huge book, but for a tiny thing like this, it's really not that necessary. I did like practicing on it though!<br />
<br />
Once the quires were stitched together, I pressed them into the book press, and used a light hammer to round out the spine a bit, and prepare it for gluing. To be honest, I need to do more reading as to the period practice of reinforcing the spine at this step in medieval bookbinding, but for this book I used a small strip of linen for reinforcement, and used PVA glue. When that was dry, I added pre-made headbands (not pictured).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJLpIPegBsm-M4mAz54cnXH2iZy5qDQ4E7UKmuJNM3OsI99XR3BD1vILs3iArCCLx1u1GNU2pNIuhpNDmqvopuIPSEzskkn1yRaUVQv1-sANNcYidVfD5NWyRD_4hqU1A-W0nsWzEU44/s1600/20170107_165553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJLpIPegBsm-M4mAz54cnXH2iZy5qDQ4E7UKmuJNM3OsI99XR3BD1vILs3iArCCLx1u1GNU2pNIuhpNDmqvopuIPSEzskkn1yRaUVQv1-sANNcYidVfD5NWyRD_4hqU1A-W0nsWzEU44/s320/20170107_165553.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I left that to dry, and set about making a raised design to add to the cover. Due to the timeline, researching and recreating period sculpting clay or gesso was not feasible. Additionally, my bookboard was slated to be pieces of chipboard rather than actual wood, which changes the scope of the project as well. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3diilAuXSFucoVwYhr1L4bCO_75mtJaaG8Uqsq73Kli-b_wACL4KUbAdf-ryCH8hOsLqcd2-x5Ju-Ke2EVyOWZ3RW1mlna3lQAfTLuUAuqVZFMdjW_JgVW9Ri2lqPjM5eA5AOe92evyU/s1600/20170108_161745.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3diilAuXSFucoVwYhr1L4bCO_75mtJaaG8Uqsq73Kli-b_wACL4KUbAdf-ryCH8hOsLqcd2-x5Ju-Ke2EVyOWZ3RW1mlna3lQAfTLuUAuqVZFMdjW_JgVW9Ri2lqPjM5eA5AOe92evyU/s320/20170108_161745.jpg" width="320" /></a>My dear husband suggested I use sculpy - it's lightweight, fast to cure, and would never show under the leather binding. Pretty much a perfect idea. <br />
<br />
I sculpted pieces that comprise a Valknut, a Norse symbol of importance to the recipient.<br />
<br />
I'd never used sculpy before, and found it difficult to maintain sharp smooth edges when trying to move it from my cutting board over onto the silicone baking sheet. I crossed my fingers and hoped that covering the whole thing in leather would hide some of my sins.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I covered the text block with paper to protect it from stray glue, and covered the book in a supple brown goat skin. I used small manicure tools and a bookbinding spatula to push the leather into the nooks and crannies of the Valknut. When that was completely dry, I added red end papers (not pictured) and called it good!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lo, praise the labor of Artemisians;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of strong-armed Danes, in days long sped - we have heard!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And what honor the Northman gives!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oft Asgierr Rekke I Dane from unseen Quarters </div>

aids many a tribe, house and nobles-all.</div>

Never he rests, always seeking duty done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Famed is this Asgierr, far flies the boast of him,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Son of the Dane in the Gryphon Lands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So comes to this great man, recognition of Jarls</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
From hands of the good Tsar called Lakhan, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And Tsarista Vigdis, come honors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Named as a Pillar, Golden and cherished, this hall-sung hero.</div>

Things I'd do differently next time?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Leave more of a border on the left side of the text. It worked out, but my eyes would like a bit more white space.</li>
<li>Start on page 3 instead of 2. An extra blank page at the beginning would be a good thing, since page 1 actually becomes part of the endpaper.</li>
<li>Use wood or a heavier bookboard, and do that research on period clay stuff!</li>
<li>Dilute the glue more when working on fiddly cover bits. If it gets too sticky too soon, that's no bueno. The extra work time will help in stretching the leather over the spine as well - I felt this was a bit too loose.</li>
<li>Take the time to press the final book for 24 hours.</li>
</ol>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As background, I should share that I have used a faux gold leaf in the past - I believe it was aluminum based, and it was very sad and frustrating, and the outcome was bland and uninspiring as well as sloppy. No bueno. I have stuck to gold gouache and Finetec micah pigments in place of gold leaf out of fear. However, real gold, and quality binder? A WORLD of difference. I'm no longer afraid! (See, even experienced peers and artists have stumbling blocks!)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I'll start by posting pictures of the final piece, then I'll share my inspiration and process. Click to enlarge!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is done in the style of late period European patents and grants of arms. I specifically tried to seek out inspiration of English pieces, such as this <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33317700@N07/4053886881/in/pool-788974@N20" target="_blank">marriage deed for Jane Seymour to Henry VIII c.1536:</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this stunning Ref: Add. Ms. 2605 Illuminated initial letter with portrait of Henry VIII from Letters Patent to Thomas Bowyer of London concerning the Manor of Runcton in North Mundham, 21 April, 1540. Unfortunately the original source I found for this image is missing, but it is available on <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/8303580539974258/" target="_blank">Pinterest here.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo6FieFO7xI7DOccfYqKY7Oh1blBJvighLeFS6OQY5lASa-zHkdZVRFWxBzsunGhqRttqnmrhXm41IPAg6pCFfBbx0CtEaJE1EgA46ZUmbNj3QizTlIY6jIEiwzW9tLFK9I9koTPY_9aI/s1600/ThomasBowyer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo6FieFO7xI7DOccfYqKY7Oh1blBJvighLeFS6OQY5lASa-zHkdZVRFWxBzsunGhqRttqnmrhXm41IPAg6pCFfBbx0CtEaJE1EgA46ZUmbNj3QizTlIY6jIEiwzW9tLFK9I9koTPY_9aI/s320/ThomasBowyer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then of course there are the multitude of sources and text samples found on <a href="http://verysleepy.itgo.com/grants.htm" target="_blank">this website on Fifteenth Century English Patents of Arms.</a> Go there and visit it! Great stuff! I was particularly inspired by the Grant of arms for Eton College (about halfway down the website referenced above):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0XnuRQ3llEQkDjkhxlvkFC9pR5mOYBz8pUVNDMc4a42J_i6qmuStNWYcp3njyLgP185mWzqth__GfLk0skVRqbGArfHsof7vqdLtxqIEPtmVYAWERjaNoPnkin7wp9AkEVMrHpZNxGEY/s1600/EtonCollege.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0XnuRQ3llEQkDjkhxlvkFC9pR5mOYBz8pUVNDMc4a42J_i6qmuStNWYcp3njyLgP185mWzqth__GfLk0skVRqbGArfHsof7vqdLtxqIEPtmVYAWERjaNoPnkin7wp9AkEVMrHpZNxGEY/s1600/EtonCollege.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Incidentally, Eton College still exists today, and claim to have their original grant available in their archives for viewing, but they don't have a digital copy on their website that I could find - pity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few things were clear in my design choices. I wanted a giant ornate cadel, and the first line to be a larger size nib, with additional capital cadels and flourishes. I wanted the rest of the illumination to be all about the display of arms. Mostly because Elyas's arms are gorgeous, and the supporters were chosen (not by me!) to be very personal to him. I modeled the pottery on his crest after the puzzle cup he made and baffled many an Artemisian with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, the cadel "D" was inspired by a letter from <a href="https://www.newberry.org/renaissance-calligraphy-books" target="_blank">John Scottowe's book Alphabet of Ornamental Capitals c.1592</a> (I hope). I found this cadel on Pinterest, which I both love and hate because it can be so inspiring, but links and references can end up dead or circular. It took me some time to find a viable source of this image - and even then it's a partial guess because I've yet to find an actual copy of this book to make sure it's in there. Stylistically, it fits, but I could be perpetuating incorrect information. I'll keep digging for the truth, and if you find I'm wrong please let me know!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfOFIGttvl1ASSb9stscAZKqH-AB3AmdLqMuN5yjHrzyHJN8g8sqnbs5iktMRK6Lu9VFrpuS6tugnbihissEqZQbOeitmWETCZx0_r0b6EUcb6y_1S8LvdFjscXKGsMF1MK0Oftuzdkvw/s1600/JohnScottowe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfOFIGttvl1ASSb9stscAZKqH-AB3AmdLqMuN5yjHrzyHJN8g8sqnbs5iktMRK6Lu9VFrpuS6tugnbihissEqZQbOeitmWETCZx0_r0b6EUcb6y_1S8LvdFjscXKGsMF1MK0Oftuzdkvw/s320/JohnScottowe.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did this piece on pergamenata with Pilot Iroshizuko Take-Sumi ink, Winsor and Newton gouache, and 23k loose leaf gold. I used minatatum ink as the binder for the gold. I tried to apply it using a dip pen, but it refused to flow at the angle in which I was working. Due to the size of the piece, changing that angle was non-negotiable. I switched to a cheap paintbrush and carried on. I applied the gold almost immediately, but in theory it should have remained tacky for about 24 hours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Incidentally, the mermaid's jewelry is gold gouache, not leaf, because I'd already applied paint near there, and I didn't want to accidentally get gold sticking where it shouldn't be.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what is my favorite part of this piece, aside from the wicked long text? It's a tossup between the tiny ermine spots on the mantle, and the red tiger's white beard. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was thrilled to be asked to collaborate with the amazingly gifted Duchess Caryn von Katzenberg to create a Pelican scroll for Baroness Mistress Heloys de Bec, someone who is incredibly admirable in both her art and her service.<br />
<br />
Her Grace and I brainstormed options, and decided to go with something inspired by the Codex Manesse, because Heloys has always represented the epitome of the 14th Century, and always looks like she has stepped right out of the pages of this book.<br />
<br />
I did the calligraphy, and Duchess Caryn did the layout and illumination. This was given out at the 50th Year Anniversary Celebration of the Society for Creative Anachronism.<br />

Most people who know me know that I'm ridiculously addicted to bright, vivid shades of blue. Cobalt and peacock/teal being my favorites. My dear hubby asked me to give him a favor to wear while fighting, so I turned to my stash for something to embroider on. I have a pretty large length of this gorgeous teal linen left over from a hood project I've yet to complete and is a looming Unfinished Object (UFO) from my past.<br />
<br />
I recently submitted my device and badge up the chain through the Heralds of the SCA, and while I'm waiting <strike>patiently </strike>impatiently, I decided go ahead and use my device as designed.<br />
<br />
I drew the badge onto the linen and stitched it using a chain stitch, which I must admit I was new to. I've done a ton of back stitch, stem stitch, and Holbein stitch cross stitch, long-arm cross stitch, and many other kinds of embroidery in my life, but never chain. So it took a bit to get the hang of it. I think you can tell from the finished project, but I like to leave things as proof of learning rather than pick them out and try to be perfect all the time.<br />
<br />
Also, I didn't take a picture of the finished piece, so I stole this from hubby's Facebook page. I hope he forgives me.Jaquelinnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04627180084418283174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3487011485573550992.post-18694947104948169682016-06-02T15:36:00.003-07:002016-06-02T15:36:43.124-07:00Largesse - Another tiny book<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxy8THb9D5JIm89ceO-VrScY8Oz8QN1CqoV2GcaDbbw_Dc0hwokXihKKSadLMJWQ6Bi6bXdxei1xHrgjK2V4uPxdpNpKmkRTCOYVQOBG4ERfeYMcyuEsu1OtyqIewB4DE7BJpulgCpCAI/s1600/20160523_194154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxy8THb9D5JIm89ceO-VrScY8Oz8QN1CqoV2GcaDbbw_Dc0hwokXihKKSadLMJWQ6Bi6bXdxei1xHrgjK2V4uPxdpNpKmkRTCOYVQOBG4ERfeYMcyuEsu1OtyqIewB4DE7BJpulgCpCAI/s320/20160523_194154.jpg" width="232" /></a>Our kingdom made a call for largesse to provide for the <a href="http://www.sca50year.org/" target="_blank">50 year celebration of the SCA</a> (kind of a big deal). I had all kinds of plans to make a fancy schmancy book with the device/symbol chosen by Their Majesties of Northshield to commemorate their reign. Sadly, reality had to hit me eventually. The largesse display was at Quest this last weekend, and time had run out. I did manage to finish one of my cute tiny books, so that had to be my little contribution.<br />
<br />
My heart is big, but my crafting is slow. I was also working on two scrolls, so that ate into my time a bit.<br />
<br />
Special thanks to my hubby who acted as my "hand model" to show off the size and scope of this book.<br />
<br />
These little things are the perfect size for taking notes during circles. This one is covered in a lovely blue suede, and is kind of "first cousins" to the <a href="http://cobalt-dragonfly.blogspot.com/2015/06/notebook-largesse.html" target="_blank">books I made for largesse last year</a>. One even has the same leather cover, but this has square corners instead of round!<br />

I was most pleased to be asked to do the Gryphon and Tablet scroll for Fiametta da Trastavere, which is our Baronial award for teaching. Having the honor of being the premier member of the order, I have some vested interest in its membership. Baroness Magistra Fiametta has proven her worthiness of entering this order. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I struggled with what kind of scroll to do, and even toyed with the idea of a non-traditional award. In the end, I went with tradition, when I found an inspiration piece that screamed Fiametta.</div>

One of those activities was the "Coruscant Saber Training School," made possible by the awesome folks from the Barony of Loch Salann, and House Sith, AKA my own dear husband and his epic collection of lightsabers, and a few of our amazing friends. This was obviously not an SCA-centric event, but some members chose to help out, as the Viridian Center has been good to the Barony.<br />
<br />
I didn't make anything for this event, but did go to support it, and to have fun. My dearest darling Sith Husband wore his <strike>Cosplay </strike>alter ego, Darth Aeo. I'm just sharing pictures, because it was super fun.<br />
<br />
We had several people teaching sword-play moves, and then people would duel at will. We seemed to have a good reception.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDhvtT_JfuzmboWuBpIbSD2Ey7honNy0CXR7POGsow0YJU18jdN4TFQFuzDpKbvhKtMC06ZbgxLvhFIOVcey5Fqel3ggXStBYjNo-mhuAm_BGFbi2dKrY3Zlg_WxbjlWDhSjaXDFgpqU/s1600/20160409_192450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDhvtT_JfuzmboWuBpIbSD2Ey7honNy0CXR7POGsow0YJU18jdN4TFQFuzDpKbvhKtMC06ZbgxLvhFIOVcey5Fqel3ggXStBYjNo-mhuAm_BGFbi2dKrY3Zlg_WxbjlWDhSjaXDFgpqU/s320/20160409_192450.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>

<br />
Turns out that's a nope. It took about 1 hour from start to finish, with me already knowing the process. This book is 4.5" x 5.5", with five signatures. I'm going to have to trim time off by prepping more materials in advance, such as gluing the covers together (saves 10 minutes!), and possibly pre-folding all the signatures (groan), to allow time for explaining the process and giving students time to make mistakes and fix them. It's important to finish the book in the class because the final stitches are different, for attaching the cover.<br />
<br />
I'm disappointed, but glad I did this so my class isn't a big fat fail. I also learned that my screw punch has issues and people are going to have to share hole punches for the covers. This should get interesting... (Anyone have a 1/16 or 1/8" hole punch they want to lend me for a day?)<br />
<br />
I also need to remind myself to pick up more wide-mouthed needles and pencils. I am also now the proud owner of a ton of glue sticks that my students will no longer get to play with.Jaquelinnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04627180084418283174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3487011485573550992.post-17892377138277097092016-04-11T14:24:00.000-07:002016-04-15T07:22:24.337-07:00AwlsI'm teaching a class on coptic stitch bookbinding at <a href="http://artemisia.sca.org/new/kwhss2016.php" target="_blank">Known World Heraldic and Scribes Symposium</a> this month. Since we only have 55 minutes to completely construct a book, each student will need a full set of the tools needed, as there will be no time for sharing.<br />
<br />
An important tool in bookbinding is an awl, for punching stitching holes in the signatures (bundles of folios). There are many <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=awl" target="_blank">kinds of awls</a>, from scratch awls, tailors awls, punch awls, and more. For bookbinding, pretty much any will work so long as it's straight and not a tapered awl (you want your holes to be of a consistent size).<br />
<br />
I'm not rich, and awls can get expensive quickly if you're providing a dozen or so of them. So this was my ghetto-fab fix.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9CDpAm9LdII1AGFlTmZ2kVpZIwCVq7jvCe66IyZJ4dU2kIZAY25A__jS9MXTeFQ-FLlcJUN1LvFN5SIwhBTHL-JmG0T5Sjx2ke9aHPBvIXoZqLGjCp5L1uQ6HnMhf1iUH37-7MJniCXE/s1600/20160408_164556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9CDpAm9LdII1AGFlTmZ2kVpZIwCVq7jvCe66IyZJ4dU2kIZAY25A__jS9MXTeFQ-FLlcJUN1LvFN5SIwhBTHL-JmG0T5Sjx2ke9aHPBvIXoZqLGjCp5L1uQ6HnMhf1iUH37-7MJniCXE/s320/20160408_164556.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkQ1uDtfNjuy9xf8lQ_JxSO1j5aEAbLK9l4m0R5FD_2dU5UAWhythlq0EEe9qhw_AWYbklSHhkCHhB2ea3XgDudrgLO5scfmQ3azK79KN-BkLxjlMgJZRbPuH-LzbQrqnK8X4EX7JOnBE/s1600/20160408_171802.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="189" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkQ1uDtfNjuy9xf8lQ_JxSO1j5aEAbLK9l4m0R5FD_2dU5UAWhythlq0EEe9qhw_AWYbklSHhkCHhB2ea3XgDudrgLO5scfmQ3azK79KN-BkLxjlMgJZRbPuH-LzbQrqnK8X4EX7JOnBE/s320/20160408_171802.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I used 3" roofing nails. They're not as sharp nor tapered as smoothly as a proper awl, but they'll work. I then made little handles for them using Sugru. Sugru is an awesome mouldable glue. It acts like clay, and when it cures, it's a hardened rubber plastic. These little handles will help my students push and pull their awls through signatures.<br />

But I've decided that sub-par photos will just have to be ok for this one.<br />
<br />
My dear Sven decided to take up rapier fighting, and needed armor that meets the safety requirements of the SCA. Rather than come up with a separate persona, he decided to maintain his Templar persona with a bit of appropriate anachronism, using this adorable image of fighting monks.<br />

The robes are plain and simple, based on his regular Templar robes, with shortened length to avoid tripping. It's made of heavy black cotton twill, lined in heavy red cotton twill. He also wears two shirts underneath it, to ensure he has plenty of underarm coverage. The robes actually turned out a little too short, in retrospect. I suspect a second version will be forthcoming soon. The length issue is not one of safety, but one of aesthetics.<br />

He now fights with cotton pants beneath rather than the tights, and his footwear varies depending on the fighting surface. His period boots have a serious lack of traction, which is something we're working on.</center>

Fighting masks are required to have a back drape to protect the back of the head and neck. I decided to do a full hood over Sven's mask instead of a simple drape, to fit his persona. This is also heavy black twill lined in heavy red twill. It was tricky to sew onto the mask so the hood will never slide off his head, but the final product works very well, protects as needed, and looks really neat. I rolled the hood fabric a little when affixing it to the mask, to ensure the red lining would show. This also hides the white bib that is attached to the fencing mask. The Templar Cross is red linen appliqued into place.</center>
